Velena Jones Biography
Velena Jones is an award-winning journalist currently working as a reporter for NBC Bay Area’s weekday newscasts covering Oakland and the East Bay. She joined the station in May 2022.
Velena Jones Career
She was born and raised in the Bay Area, Concord, San Francisco, California. Jones is excited to be back home reporting in the communities she grew up in. In addition, she is a huge Warriors fan and grew up rooting for both the A’s and Giants. Jones was published in Seventeen Magazine as an aspiring journalist and interviewed Lisa Ling.
Prior to joining NBC Bay Area, Jones served as a reporter and fill-in anchor at KOVR-TV CBS Sacramento, California for two years. At the station, she covered historic wildfires and worked on special projects highlighting community members working to unify the region. In addition, Jones covered stories that impacted the city including the 2022 mass shooting in downtown Sacramento and Church shooting.
Before her time in Sacramento, she worked as a reporter and fill-in anchor in KOIN- TV Portland, Oregon for two years too. At the station, Jones worked on countless stories including major protest, including an anti-ICE protest that shut down the building for days.
Prior to Portland, she spent four years at WISC-TV News 3 in Madison, Wisconsin as a reporter and fill-in anchor. At the station, Jones worked on many important stories such as police protests and a University of Wisconsin student charged with sexually assaulting over a dozen women. In addition, she was also the first reporter to get an exclusive jail interview with Joseph Jakubowski, a man who led authorities on a 10-day nationwide manhunt. He had stolen over a dozen rifles and sent a 161- page manifesto to President Trump.

Jones is a recipient of a Midwest Regional Emmy for her role in the coverage of the Tony Robinson shooting in Madison in 2015.
Previously, she was the main anchor, news director and reporter at WBKB-TV 11 in Alpena, Michigan for about a year. Jones also hosted a weekly newsmagazine highlighting important local and state issues in the station. In addition, she won a Michigan Broadcasting Award for a program she hosted, “Insights into Northern Michigan.”
Jones started her career as a News Assistant and Traffic Producer at KABC7 in Los Angeles, California. She interviewed Smoky Robinson, covered the 25th anniversary of the LA riots, and the Conrad Murray trial at the station. He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter of singer Michael Jackson.
Jones graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism from Biola University in Southern California.
In her free time, you can find her hiking, doing yoga, paddle boarding and exploring wineries and restaurants. Jones is also an active member of the National Association of Black Journalist. She is also a certified Yoga Instructor.
