Tom Haynes is an award winning journalist currently working as an anchor for FOX 5 News at 5 p.m. and News Edge at 11 p.m. He joined the station in December 2007.
Tom Haynes Career
Prior to moving to Atlanta, Haynes worked at WSVN-TV 7News, the FOX affiliate in Miami, Florida for five years. While there, he was part of the station’s primary anchor team and also reported for the station’s evening newscasts. Haynes co-hosted the 4, 5:30 and 6:30pm newscasts and reported for the 10 & 11PM news.
After Miami, he spent one year at WDIV-TV in Detroit, Michigan as a morning news anchor and a general assignment reporter.
He has covered a wide range of stories from the anchor desk to live reporting. At FOX 5, Haynes has been front and center for major elections and field anchoring from storm-ravaged parts of Georgia. In addition, he field anchored during the fiery collapse of I-85 and anchored live from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Where a gunman carried out the worst school shooting in U.S. history. Furthermore, Haynes also traveled to interview notable television personalities such as Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and Judge Judy.

At CNN, when he was an anchor and reporter, Haynes was on air in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks. In addition, Haynes also covered the U.S.-led invasion in Iraq and Afghanistan. Furthermore, while he was in Miami, Haynes reported on the unprecedented 2004 and 2005 Atlantic hurricane seasons that battered Florida and the Gulf Coast. He also reported from Panama before the handover of the Panama Canal in 1999. Other highlights from his career include his profile of undersea explorer Sylvia Earle during a deep-water dive in Dry Tortugas National Park. Haynes also reported live from Boston on Election Night 2004.
He began his career in journalism as a production assistant for CNN’s Larry King Live. Haynes then moved to CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia where he worked as a producer, reporter and anchor. He has received national recognition for his work such as an Emmy Award. Additionally, Haynes also received a Beacon Award for hosting a live town-hall meeting following the first debate of the 2000 presidential election. And a Prism commendation for his CNN series “Drugs: Perceptions, Realities.”
He was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Haynes graduated with a degree in Political Science, Political Economy from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1994. In his spare time, he enjoys all that the Atlanta community has to offer and works out to stay in shape at the gym.
