Serena Altschul Biography

Serena Altschul is an award winning journalist currently working as a contributor for “CBS Sunday Morning” since 2013. She joined the station on 23 December, 2003 as a CBS News Contributing Correspondent.

Serena Altschul Career

Prior to joining CBS News, Altschul worked as a New York-based correspondent for CNN (2002-03). She produced and hosted a one-hour “CNN Presents” special on the return of PCP that aired last November and also contributed to “NewsNight With Aaron Brown.”

During her time at CNN, Altschul continued to serve as a reporter and producer for MTV News, which she joined in 1996 as a contributor to the cable network’s “Choose or Lose” political awareness campaign. In addition, she covered a wide variety of hard news and popular culture stories for MTV which she had joined in 1987, including profiles of political leaders and musical legends. Furthermore, Altschul also created, produced and hosted an MTV documentary series called “Breaking it Down,” hour-long, single-topic specials that focused on issues such as gang violence, homeless teenagers and the effects of the drug trade. That series ran for four years (1999-2002). She further hosted two acclaimed editions of MTV’s “True Life” series, one on heroin abuse among affluent Dallas teenagers. And another on the murder of Matthew Shepard, an openly gay student at the University of Wyoming.

In December 2001, Altschul contributed to an edition of the CBS News magazine “48 Hours” on the increasing use and abuse of Oxycontin.

Her career in journalism began after school as an anchor and reporter for Channel One News, the news channel seen in high schools nationwide. She played as herself on Jay Z’s 1999 song, “Dope Man”. Additionally, Altschul also appeared as herself in the films Light it Up, Queen of the Damned and Josie and the Pussycats.

She was born in New York City. Altschul attended Scripps College for a few years studying English Literature but did not graduate. In 1993, while still in college, she worked as the associate producer of  a political documentary, The Last Party.

Her father Arthur Altschul, was a member of the Lehman banking family and was of German-Jewish ancestry and passed on 17 March 2002. Her parents divorced in 1972 when she was two years and with her two siblings Arthur Goodhart Altschul Jr. and Emily Altschul (Miller), grew up living with their mother. Altschul also has two half-brother siblings, Charles Altschul and Stephen Altschul from her father’s previous marriage.
