Scott McGrew Biography

Scott McGrew is a skilled journalist currently working as an anchor and reporter in NBC Bay Area. He prospers at the intersection of entrepreneurship and venture capital. McGrew joined the station in August 1998.

McGrew is host of Press: Here, a weekly roundtable highlighting world class technology reporters in conversation with Silicon Valley CEO’s. It airs on NBC Bay Area on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. right after Meet the Press. Each week a team of contributors joins him such as reporters from the BBC, Forbes, Fortune, Wired, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

In addition, McGrew also created and developed Sand Hill Road, a weekly podcast about venture capital. The podcast can be found on Apple Podcasts, Google Play and all the other podcast hosts.

He is noted for the first interview with Apple founder Steve Wozniak after the company first revealed CEO Steve Job’s illness would cause him to step aside. McGrew was the first journalist to reveal the crimes behind the death of a South Bay Marine in Afghanistan. US Marine Harry Lew was severely hazed leading to his suicide death. He is the only reporter in the world that accompanied United States Air Force F-16s as they flew combat air patrol to deny air access to potential targets in San Francisco as part of Operation Enduring Freedom following 9/11.

McGrew has been an eyewitness to a firing squad in the death of John Albert Taylor in Utah and chased greased pigs at the Iowa State Fair. In addition, he is an active speaker on technology and television at Stanford, Brigham Young and other universities as well as numerous conferences.

Prior to joining NBC Bay Area, McGrew worked at KSTU Fox 13 TV in Salt Lake City, Utah for four years. He started covering technology in 1998 and became the first technology reporter for Fox News Channel during its startup phase. In addition, he was also the weekend producer and general assignment reporter at the station.

Before KSTU Fox 13 TV, he spent one year at WTVG in Toledo Ohio as a general assignment reporter. Previously McGrew had worked at WMAZ TV in Macon, Georgia as a weekend anchor and general assignment reporter for two years.

Furthermore, McGrew is also a regular emcee and host for the Ernst and Young’s Northern California Entrepreneur of the Year, the Global CleanTech Forum, United Way and the Boy Scouts. He also helps foster excellent business journalism as a judge the UCLA’s Gerald Loeb awards.

McGrew is a father to two grown up sons, one a Santa Clara County paramedic and the other a U.S. Navy sailor.

He is a part-time Cessna 172 pilot, MIG and TIG welder and a lector in the Episcopal Church. None of which he does very well, McGrew claims, but he says he’s trying.

McGrew is also the inspiration for fictional reporter “Scotty Ryan” in the novel Perfect on Paper by Maria Murnane.
