Scott MacFarlane is a multiple award winning journalist currently working as a correspondent for CBS News reporting for all broadcasts and platforms. He joined the network in 2021.

MacFarlane has over two decades of reporting in Washington D.C. and is a recipient of 20 Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards. His reporting has led directly to the passage of five new state laws in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. to bolster protections for children in public schools, helping MacFarlane earn the Anna Quindlen Award for excellence in journalism from the Child Welfare League of America.

Moreover, he has covered the U.S. Congress and Justice Department at CBS News. MacFarlane has served as the designated House chamber correspondent for Presidential State of the Union addresses and in-studio correspondent for election night coverage. Furthermore, he has covered Supreme Court confirmation hearings and was in the courtrooms for all of the legal cases involving President Donald Trump in New York, Florida and Washington, D.C.

In addition, MacFarlane was the CBS News correspondent on-site at the assassination attempt of Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania in July 2024. He reported the first accounts of the shooting scene and emergency responses for CBS News in the moments after the shots.

MacFarlane further chronicled the largest criminal prosecution in US history, covering the 1,600 federal cases brought from the 6 January, 2021 US Capitol siege.

Prior to joining CBS News, MacFarlane worked as an investigative reporter for WRC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C. for eight years, where he also served as a Washington Bureau contributor to NBC News channel, the affiliate news service.

Before WRC-TV, MacFarlane was a Congressional Correspondent for the COX Media Group and its affiliate television and radio stations.

Previously, he has been a Washington-based contributor to Sirius/XM Radio since 2011. Macfarlane also worked for CBS affiliates in Detroit and Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 2001, MacFarlane earned the Wade H. McCree award for excellence in reporting on the justice system while working at the WKBD/WWJ-TV in Detroit. In 1999, he won first place in the national William Randolph Hearst Broadcast News Competition.

His career in journalism began in Syracuse, New York, where he was an on-air music announcer and news reporter for WYYY-FM radio and WSYR-AM radio, and also worked at WTVH-TV in Syracuse. In addition, MacFarlane was an active member and leader at WJPZ-FM and WAER-FM student radio stations at Syracuse University, where he graduated summa cum laude. He is the only person to ever be inducted into both the university’s WAER radio Hall of Fame and WJPZ radio Hall of Fame. MacFarlane is a super fan of 90’s R&B music and has coached youth basketball.

MacFarlane attended Highland High School and got inducted in the school Hall of fame in 2021. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in broadcast journalism and political philosophy from Syracuse University S.I Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1998.
