Ryan Hanrahan Biography
Ryan Hanrahan is a skilled journalist currently working as the Chief Meteorologist of the NBC Connecticut Storm Tracker team. He can be seen weekdays during the 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts on NBC Connecticut. Hanrahan joined the station in 2005.
Ryan Hanrahan Career
Hanrahan grew up along the shoreline in Guilford, Connecticut and his interest in the weather was sparked by the 1989 Hamden tornado. And also hurricanes Gloria and Bob, and the blizzards of ’93 and ’96.
Prior to his return to Connecticut in 2005, he worked as a meteorologist for WNYT-News Channel 13, the NBC affiliate in Albany, New York. Hanrahan graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Pennsylvania State University. In addition, he also studied atmospheric science in graduate school at the State University of New York at Albany.
His weathercasts have been recognized by the American Meteorological Society with their Seal of Approval. In addition, he received an Emmy for his forecasts in 2016.
At NBC Connecticut, Hanrahan has covered many of the state’s biggest storms. Such as Tropical Storm Irene, Hurricane Sandy, the October snowstorm, the Blizzard of 2013 and the May 2018 tornado outbreak across Connecticut.
He currently lives in West Hartford, Connecticut. Besides forecasting the weather, Hanrahan enjoys spending his free time with his Golden Retriever, Doppler, relaxing on the beach or on the slopes skiing. He also volunteers with Special Olympics Connecticut and visits schools across the state talking about science.
Hanrahan loves visiting schools and talking about the importance of math and science and sharing his love for the weather. In fact he talks to anyone about Connecticut weather and Connecticut weather history if they’ll listen!

His father retired as a branch operating manager in Hamden, Connecticut, for the Graybar Electric Company, a power company based in St. Louis, Mo. He has a sibling brother, Steven.
