Raj Mathai Biography
Raj Mathai is a twelve time Emmy award winner currently working as the weeknight news anchor for NBC Bay Area. He is among the station’s most well known journalist and anchors the nightly 5.30, 6, 7 and 11 p.m. News. Mathai joined the station in 1998.
Raj Mathai Career
Mathai interviews high profile newsmakers such as Vice President Kamala Harris, Governor Gavin Newson and General Colin Powell. In 2013, he conducted exclusive interviews with John McAfee about his life and his legal troubles. He has also interviewed baseball legend Barry Bonds, 49ers owner Jed York and many more. Mathai also field anchors NBC Bay Area’s breaking news and big events coverage. Such as the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami, 2019 Gilroy mass shooting, the 2017 Inauguration of Donald Trump, 2017 Las Vegas Massacre and the 2016 San Bernardino shootings.
He led KNTV’s coverage of the 2013 Asiana Airlines Crash at San Francisco International Airport. Mathai was on air for seven consecutive hours and the first journalist to interview a survivor of the crash.

In 1998, he joined KNTV as Sports Director and transitioned to primary news anchor in 2011. In addition, Mathai reported on-location from the Olympics in London, Vancouver, Turin, Athens, Salt Lake City and Tokyo.
He is among a few people in the world to have run the Olympic Torch three times in 1996, 2002 and 2008. Furthermore, Mathai was part of the Giants broadcast team in 2008-2012 with Jon Miller and Mike Krukow during NBC Bay Area telecasts of the Giants. In addition, he co-hosted Sports Sunday with Jerry Rice, Nnamdi Asomugha, Jeff Garcia and Ken Norton Jr.
He was born in Trivandrum, Kerala, India but grew up on the Peninsula and was a student at Los Altos High School. Mathai graduated with a degree in journalism and political science from San Diego State University. Prior to joining NBC Bay Area, he worked for NBC affiliates KSEE in Fresno, California, KNSD in San Diego, California and KYMA-DT in Yuma, Arizona.
In 1995, Mathai became the country’s first Indian sportscaster for a network affiliate in the United States of America when he began at KYMA-DT. Before his career in television, he worked as a public relations assistant for the San Diego Chargers for five seasons.
Mathai is on the Board of Governors for the San Francisco Symphony and Board of Directors for the Asian Pacific Fund. He and his family are involved in various Bay Area charities.
Mathai is also a moderator for the Commonwealth Club of California and a regular guest instructor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
