Omar Villafranca Biography
Omar Villafranca is an award winning journalist currently working as a CBS News correspondent based in Dallas, Texas since April 2016. He joined the network in January 2014 as a correspondent for Newspath, CBS News’ 24-hour newsgathering service for CBS stations and broadcasters around the world.

Villafranca has covered for CBS News on the ground at the riots in Ferguson, Missouri, along the destructive path of Hurricanes Harvey, Maria and Michael, and traveled to El Salvador to trace the root cause of migrants coming to the United States. In addition, he has been part of CBS News’ multiplatform, multi-broadcast coverage of the shooting of five police officers in Dallas. For his extensive coverage of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery on CBS News platforms and on “48 Hours,” Villafranca is a recipient of a Gracie from the Alliance for Women in Media and the Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association.
Before joining CBS News , Villafranca worked as a reporter at KXAS-TV Dallas-Fort Worth for over six years. He spent four years as a reporter and anchor at KOTV-TV the CBS affiliate in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Villafranca began his career in journalist at KSWO-TV in Lawton, Oklahoma for a year as an anchor and reporter.
He was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Villafranca graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Texas Christian University. He lives with his wife and daughter in Texas.

“Like millions of other kids across the country, I remember watching the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger at Castle Hills with Mrs. Carter,” recalled Villafranca. “We saw the explosion. Some of the teachers turned off the TV. Obviously, that is something traumatic for kids. But I had so many questions after seeing that. What happened? Why did it happen? I asked the teachers ALL week questions about it, but it was a tough subject. Now, I ask questions for a living!”
He also remembers seeing news crews at Castle Hills when Senator Phil Gramm came for a visit then seeing his school in the newspaper the next day.
Lessons from Castle Hills continue to stick with Villafranca as he works hard to find answers and inform the public on major events.
Villafranca graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Texas Christian University.
