Nancy Chen Biography

Nancy Chen is an award winning journalist currently working as a CBS News correspondent since 2021, reporting across all broadcasts and platforms. She joined the network’s News Path Division in February 2020.

Nancy Chen Career

Chen joined CBS News as a New York-based correspondent in 2021 after working as a correspondent with the organization’s Newspath division since February 2020. She has covered national stories including the criminal trial of Kyle Rittenhouse and the Waukesha Christmas parade attack. In addition, Chen also covered the 2022 Bronx apartment fire, the Omicron wave in New York City and the 2022 Buffalo shooting. Her work has been featured on CBS This Morning, CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donell, CBS Saturday Morning, CBS News Sunday Morning and Face the Nation. She is also a fill in anchor for CBS Mornings, CBS Saturday Morning, CBS Sunday Morning, CBS Weekend News, Face the Nation and CBS News, CBS’ streaming news channel.

In 2022, CBS This Morning won an Emmy Award at the 43rd News and Documentary Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Live News Program” where Chen was listed as a correspondent.

Before joining CBS News, Chen was a weekday anchor and reporter at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C. She hosted a reoccurring franchise titled “Hero 24/7” that highlighted volunteers in the Washington D.C. community. Furthermore, Chen is a recipient of two Emmy Awards from the National Capital Division of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences during her time at the station. One of which was for coverage of the  2017 Congressional baseball shooting.

She joined WJLA-TV from WHDH-TV in Boston, Massachusetts where she spent five years as a weekend anchor and weekday reporter. Prior to joining WHDH-TV, Chen worked as a multimedia journalist in KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo/Santa Barbara, California. Furthermore, during college she also worked as a web producer at KABC-TV in Los Angeles, California and was involved in production for NBC Sports in Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympics. She began her career in journalism as a print reporter, writing for the Tulsa World for three years.

In her career, Chen has covered a wide range of stories on the national and global level, including the Kyle Rittenhouse trial, the Congressional ballpark shooting and the Boston Marathon bombings and aftermath. In addition, she covered the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil; the 2015 Super Bowl; the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2013 EF5 Moore, Oklahoma, tornado.

She was born in Texas but raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma where her family still lives. Chen attended Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, studied Chinese at Peking University in Beijing, China and graduated as a Trustee Scholar with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California.
