Monica Dean Biography
Monica Dean is a National Edward R. Murrow Award-winning journalist currently working as an anchor and reporter for NBC7 San Diego. She co-anchors the stations 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. weekday newscasts. Dean joined NBC 7 in 2004.
Monica Dean Career
She recently launched a year long investigation into sex trafficking and exploitation of children in San Diego and beyond. Her findings following the expansive investigation are the basis of a seven episode documentary series and multimedia platform of content titled “STOLEN”.
Dean’s work has been recognized since the digital launch of “STOLEN” in August 2020. She is a recipient of a Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) National Murrow Award for “Excellence in innovation.”. In addition Dean also received three regional Murrow Awards, a Golden Mike Award and four Emmy Awards. As well as Silver and Bronze “Telly” Awards, and three awards from the Society of Professional Journalists San Diego chapter.
In her almost twenty years at NBC7 , she has won Emmy Awards for coverage spanning from the San Diego firestorms in 2007 to the riots at the Donald Trump rally in San Diego in 2016.
Dean assisted in establishing the KNSD Academy, an experimental learning program at NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 that introduces high school students to careers in TV news. Furthermore, she regularly emcees galas for a list of non-profit organizations that support children, sex trafficking survivors and emergency preparedness/ response. In addition, Dean is an accomplished motivational speaker.
She has lived and worked all over the world but California will always be her home home. Dean was raised in a military family and was an exchange student in Australia half of her senior year in high school.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degrees in English from University of California, Los Angeles. In addition, Dean received a Master of Science degree in Journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in Chicago. While there she was a Harrington Award recipient, Medill’s top honor for graduate students.
Dean started her TV news career in 1998 working behind the scenes at KTTV FOX 11 News in Los Angeles. She then worked on air as a correspondent for WCAX in Washington D.C. , the CBS affiliate in Burlington, Vermont. Dean worked in Bakersfield, California for KBAK/KBFX-TV , the CBS/FOX affiliates from 2002-2004. While there, she received multiple awards from the Associated Press and Kern Press club for her work .
Dean is passionate about family, faith and community. She is married and has three children, and they are all active in their community church. Dean frequently volunteers at school; teaching art to elementary students and moderating classroom book clubs. She also emcees school events, hosts church youth groups and inspires future journalists through interactive presentations. On weekends, Dean is often cheering from the sidelines of her children’s countless sporting activities and fine arts performances.
