Mike Thomas Biography
Mike Thomas is a skilled journalist currently working as a meteorologist and forecast expert with FOX 5 DC weather team. He joined the station in the summer of 2014.
Mike Thomas Career
His interest in weather began at a young age. Thomas was born and raised in small Prince George’s County town of Beltsville, Maryland. He remembers vividly the EF3 tornado that tore through the city of College Park, damaging his elementary school at the time. His drive to understand the disaster took him on the meteorology path.
Thomas attended DeMatha Catholic High School and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree, double major in mathematics and physics from University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He also holds a second degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology from Penn State University and graduated in 2012. In summer 2011, he took a weather internship under the guidance of Tucker Barnes and Tony Perkins and got his first experience with FOX 5 DC.
Prior to joining FOX 5 DC and after graduation, Thomas worked with Commodity Weather Group in Bethesda, Maryland where he focused on learning forecast techniques, weather model analysis, extended range, and seasonal forecasting. In addition, he forecasted and advised commodity traders and other meteorologists on the New York Stock Exchange. His forecasts were featured in various articles from USA Today, MSNBC, CNBC, Bloomberg, and Reuters.
Thomas began his career in television when he joined the FOX 5 Weather Team in the summer of 2014 as a part-time weekend morning meteorologist. In the fall, he joined the team full time, reuniting with his old mentor Tucker Barnes.

Furthermore, Thomas applies his weather knowledge each morning by writing the morning forecast. He also builds the vast majority of weather graphics you see on the show each day. In 2015, he went viral when he fashioned song lyrics from Taylor Swift and Madonna into weather forecasts. In addition, Thomas keeps often complicated weather patterns viral and fun. He regularly does “weather talks” on his Facebook page, particularly during snow season.
He was part of the FOX 5 Morning Team for the first eight years of his career. Thomas covered anything from hurricanes to tornado outbreaks to blizzards. The great Blizzard of 2016 is a favorite highlight of his career. Additionally, Thomas also filled in with occasional field reporting, traffic, and “Good Day DC” appearances.
In spring 2022, he was promoted to evening meteorologist to fill the void left by longtime FOX 5 Chief Meteorologist Sue Palka who retired. In addition, Thomas writes regularly on fox5dc.com as well, and is the Mid-Atlantic’s “Weather Champion” for the FOX Weather Network.
In his spare time, he spends time at home in Columbia, Maryland with his golden retriever Sid. In 2016, Thomas was voted as one of the “Top Eligible Bachelors” in Baltimore Magazine. He is an avid sports fan and regularly attends local sporting events and continues to play lacrosse, hockey, and volleyball. In addition, his passions include learning about technology, history, skiing, hiking, and traveling. A nerd at heart, Thomas loves to learn absolutely everything and is passionate about sharing that knowledge with others.
