Melita Easters Biography

Melita Easters is a skilled journalist who is the founding chair of Georgia WIN List and has served as Executive director since 2015. WIN List is a 22-year-old Political Action Committee dedicated to Changing the Face of Power in Georgia by electing Democratic women. To statewide office and the Georgia General Assembly who are committed to reproductive freedom and economic, educational and legal equality for all women. 

Melita Easters Career

Georgia WIN List has become the leading Political Action Committee (PAC) for electing Democratic women in Georgia. In addition, it has supported the election of more than 75 women, 46 of whom currently serve. Georgia currently ranks 19th in the nation for the percentage of women in its General Assembly and leads the nation for the percentage of Black women legislators. She is a creative strategic thinker, political strategist and author/playwright with deep connections to Atlanta’s civic, business and political community. Easters combines fundraising, leadership, communications, event planning and organizational skills with her background as a former journalist and television producer. In addition, she has worked to raise millions for progressive causes and candidates and was the pioneering visionary behind Atlanta’s two largest and most financially successful events for women – the Women’s Foundation Numbers Luncheon and the WYCA’s Salute to Women. 

Easters graduated with a bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from University of Georgia. During her professional career, she served as State News Editor of The Tifton Gazette and a political reporter for The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, winning several awards for her work. Furthermore, Easters was a producer of The Lawmakers for seven years on Georgia Public Television and later served as press secretary for Roy Barnes during his first bid for governor.

She served in leadership roles on multiple non-profit boards, including the Atlanta Women’s Foundation and the Atlanta International School. In addition, she serves in The Georgia Shakespeare Festival and as board chair for UGA’s independent student newspaper The Red & Black. Easters is a recipient of the National Council of Jewish Women’s 2021 Hannah G. Solomon Award for public service and was inducted into UGA’s Grady Fellowship in 2018.

She has two daughters and nine practically perfect grandchildren.

She grew up in rural Georgia. Her name means little honey and she was named for her Father’s World War II pen pal. He never met her, but he liked the name. And since they had never met, her mother was fine with that being the name for their firstborn child. In addition, it is also the name the island of Malta, in old translations of the Bible and certain streets on the island of Malta, are spelled just like her name m e l i t a.

Her mother, Elizabeth Sangster Easters passed on in 2014 at 83 years old and her father Owen Easters is also deceased. Easters has four siblings; Stanley, Aaron, Jobeth and Wilden Easters.

Easters tied the knot with Dennis Hayes in 1982 and they divorced in 1987. With an estimated $40 million divorce settlement one of the largest ever in Georgia. Hayes is the inventor of the PC modem and founder of Hayes Microcomputer Products, a manufacturer of modems.
