Maureen Umeh is a multiple award winning journalist currently working as an anchor and reporter for FOX 5 DC Morning. She joined the station in September 2002 as an anchor and reporter mostly on the evening and weekend newscasts but now she does the morning shift. Umeh also hosts Good day DC.

Umeh was born in Nigeria, partially grew up there but then relocated to Illinois Chicago. She remembers as a kid watching her favorite reporters taking on city hall and fighting for the small guy. He was a superhero to her and Umeh wanted to be just like him. She’s proud to have achieved the goal of becoming a reporter, and even more proud to know that some of her stories have helped make a difference.

Umeh joined the station in September 2002 as an anchor and reporter on mostly the evening and weekend newscasts but now she does the morning shift. She is having fun as she adjusts to the early hours. From covering something serious at the White House to dancing with a celebrity, and laughing till she cries with a famous comedian. It has been a whirlwind and Umeh is glad to hear from many viewers how much they enjoy the shows.

Her career in television began a few years ago in Champaign, Illinois as a fulltime reporter at WCIA-TV right after graduation. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Umeh worked so hard to get the job and had a radio talk show and also Dj’d. In addition, she wrote for the university newspaper and then worked at the TV station. Umeh did anything and everything she thought would give her the experience needed to be a better journalist. It wasn’t always fun, but it proves that hard work does pay off.

Next, she moved to WSPA-TV in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina as one of the main anchors for the late evening newscasts. Umeh had such an amazing experience there and treasures the memories.

Furthermore, she has been honored with multiple awards for her work. They include an Emmy for Best Investigative Series and Best Newscast. In addition, Umeh has also been honored by many other organizations, such as the South Carolina Television and Arts Association; the Illinois Broadcaster’s Association and The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

She served as the Chairwoman for the Upstate Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society. Umeh also further worked with nonprofit organizations including Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Mathew House, an agency for disadvantaged youth.

Her biggest accomplishment in life is her teenage daughter, Zula. She is a dream come true and Umeh is so grateful to be her Mom. In her spare time, Umeh loves to travel, what Nigerian doesn’t? She is a full Nigerian, born there and partially grew up there before moving to Chicago. Ask her how she got rid of her accent or learned to pronounce the word, “fork.” Now, how’s that for a tease?
