Marianne Kushi Biography
Kushi is an award-winning journalist currently working as an anchor. She co-anchors with Greg Bledsoe on NBC 7 News Today and NBC 7 News Midday. Together with co-anchor Greg Bledsoe, she is a leading voice on the NBC 7 Today in San Diego daily podcast.

“Go with the flow.” That’s what it takes to report the news.
Kushi says that one of the reasons why she chose journalism as her career is because there is a never a dull moment. She says one minute you could be reporting on a house fire and the next minute you are on a jet plane covering illegal immigrants jumping ship in the Atlantic.
“There is hardly a dull moment and you get the chance to meet and see people you’d never ordinarily encounter and bring their story to the viewer. I’ll never forget the time when I was working in Seattle. A long-lost son saw his homeless father on television. The boy traveled across Washington state to search for his father and found him only to find out that his dad was happy the way he was living.”
Kushi began her career at KCBS in Los Angeles, then worked her way up to the west coast in Bakersfield as an anchor and reporter. In addition, she worked at KOMO-TV in Seattle and KMFB-TV in San Diego then she returned to KCBS as a reporter and fill-in anchor. Kushi came back to work at NBC 7, San Diego to work as a co-anchor with Greg Bledsoe on NBC 7 News Today and NBC 7 News Midday.
She is a recipient of multiple awards including several Emmys and a Golden Mike.

Kushi says, it is a risky business sometimes reporting the news so as to inform the viewer. For example the L.A. riots when she and her crew were ahead of the path of a raging fire moving down the Malibu coast. They were warned by firefighters that the mammoth flames could pour over and envelop the fire truck they were using for cover. Kushi and her crew were fortunately able to do their live shot and get out in time.
She also enjoys how the industry is changing and how it is way more fluid with several platforms to able to tell stories. Kushi remembers when she first began in the industry, there was only broadcast, newspaper and radio. Now there are so many other mediums such social, digital, podcasts and streaming to share information.
Furthermore, it is not only the excitement of the job that drives her to do it.
As an anchor, Kushi says if she can give the people who are watching the news something, “they didn’t know or ever see before” . Then she knows she is doing her job. “It’s fun to go with the flow you never know what will happen.”
