Lolita Lopez Biography

Lolita Lopez is an award winning journalist currently working as an investigative reporter and anchor at NBC4 news. She works at 11 a.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m and joined the station in 2011.

She is part of the award-winning I-Team and digs deep into her investigative stories and cases impacting viewers in Southland. Lopez has reported on numerous significant stories. Such as national stories from Christopher Dorner manhunt to the 2012 Los Angeles Kings Stanley cup. She covered the World Trade Centre tragedy at Ground Zero for nearly two weeks earlier on in her career. Lopez spent many years reporting the effects of that tragedy.

She believes her job is complete when her news stories about a community make a difference. Lopez reported on sixth grade class that created a Facebook page. To sell their homemade art to raise money for a classmate’s family that could not afford their father’s proper funeral. The site raised more than $3000 just a day after Lopez’s story aired.

Lopez is a journalist of more than 20 years privileged to report people’s stories and honored to meet inspiring people. She is a breast cancer survivor, who shared a series of stories. On the challenges and courageous fight during treatment and recovery as a working mother and wife.

Before joining NBC4, she had a successful, decade long career at WIPX-TV in New York. She worked as a general assignment reporter and as a sports anchor in the station. Lopez worked as a main sports anchor and field reporter for NY Mets with the late great Hall of Fame pitcher, Tom Seaver. She was one of the only two reporters with Nancy Grace on Court TV’s issue oriented legal program “Pros and Cons.” Lopez reported several controversial cases while working on the show such as John Lennon’s murderer parole hearing.

Lopez has been recognized with various industry awards. For example many Los Angeles area Emmy Awards for live anchoring and investigative reports. She won two New york area Emmy awards for ‘Best Sports Feature’ and ‘Best Live Sports Coverage’. In addition, she was also praised as one of the most outstanding women in the community. By El Diario La Prensa, New York’s largest spanish language daily newspaper.

She loves spending time with family and friends. Sharing stories with lots of good food, laughter, playing volleyball on any grass or beach court when not at work. Knowing how much sports impacted her life, she enjoys participating in charitable events that support significant causes impacting Southern Californians. Such events include American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. And also promoting the importance of youth sports in our communities.

Lopez was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. She moved to Houston, Texas at 4 years when her father became the women’s track coach at Rice University. Lopez is a lifelong sports fan, who graduated from Harvard University in 1998. She was on the women’s volleyball and track teams for four years at Harvard. Lopez was also co-captain of the volleyball team in her junior and senior years.
