Kevin McCarthy Biography
Kevin McCarthy is a skilled journalist currently working as an entertainment reporter and film critic. McCarthy reviews films locally for FOX 5 DC, nationally for FOX & Friends, on a local D.C. radio station 106.7 FM The Fan with “The Sports Junkies” and FOX 29 (Philly). He joined the station in 2007.

McCarthy admits he is a nerd and takes pride in being a geek over the simplest things in life, whether it be a Doritos Double Decker taco from Taco Bell or an awesome action/dialogue scene in a film.
McCarthy has been able to live out his dream he had in his childhood because of the great people at FOX 5 and over at 106.7 The Fan. In 1992, he was 8 years old and had a deal with his parents. That if he got a perfect report card, they would let him watch “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” on VHS.’
His parents did not let him watch the film in theatres because it was R-rated. McCarthy received a perfect report card and they went to the local Blockbuster in Newport News, Virginia to rent the movie. He sat in between his parents on the couch and that was that moment McCarthy fell in love with movies. His mom took him to the best movies and concerts and protected McCarthy and his brother. In 1991, McCarthy watched all these movie trailers for the film and was so fascinated by the special effects.

McCarthy became aware, in that moment, that he wanted involvement in movies, somehow, in his future. To this day, he makes it a priority to ask filmmaking questions in every interview he does.

Throughout high school and college, McCarthy was able to watch movies with the vision of somehow being in film for his career. He was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. McCarthy graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications with a concentration in Media Production and Criticism from George Mason University in 2006, and also took film classes on the side. While in school, he took an internship at CBS radio and jumpstarted his film reviewing career. During this time, McCarthy was doing movie reviews on his AOL Instant Messenger away messages while working an internship at 106.7 WJFK-FM, in the promotions department.
Furthermore, his life changed on 18 November 2005 on 106.7 WJFK-FM when he did air movie reviews. This gave him an outlet to talk about his love for films. In 2007, FOX 5’s Tony Perkins went in studio to do a live segment on The Sports Junkies. After the segment ended, McCarthy asked Mr. Perkins if FOX 5 DC needed a movie reviewer and he was given an opportunity to audition.
Additionally, he owes a lot of his career to Mr. Perkins who has been an amazing mentor. McCarthy became aware he wanted to talk about how films are made i.e. film scores, cinematography, pure entertainment, etc. Furthermore, he wanted viewers and listeners to be just as excited as he was about the films. FOX 5 gave him the opportunity to geek out on air every Friday about his love for films. His next goal was to meet and interview his childhood heroes. Through the station, McCarthy was able to start doing press junkets where he travels to interview the biggest stars in the world.

He has further met his childhood heroes and geeks out beyond belief. McCarthy has never forgotten the first time he interviewed Arnold Schwarzenegger and shared his love for “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” From 11 years, he has been collecting his movie ticket stubs. The first one he has is from 1995 for “Die Hard With a Vengeance”, which McCarthy showed to both Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. In addition, every time he goes out for a big interview, McCarthy brings a ticket stub to show the actors and they always seem very excited to know that he’s a fan.
McCarthy hopes to direct movies on the side someday. In 2012, he had the honor of teaming up with two of his college friends to direct a short film for Steven Spielberg! The opportunity came about after McCarthy interviewed Mr. Spielberg for “War Horse” and “The Adventures of Tin Tin” in 2011. After he left the room for “The Adventures of Tin Tin”, Spielberg said that he was going to be a filmmaker and had “the stuff.” McCarthy ran into him a month later at the Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles and approached him to thank him for the interview. He told him to make a short film and send it to him. He said, “Have your people send it to my people!” To which McCarthy respectfully replied with, “I don’t have people!” Though, he found a way and sent him the film, which he did watch.
In addition, McCarthy has been a nominee twice for two National Entertainment Journalism Awards. His favorite film is “True Romance”, favorite current director is Quentin Tarantino, favorite director is Alfred Hitchcock and his favorite actor is Gary Oldman.
