Kathy Vara Biography
Kathy Vara is an award winning journalist currently working as a co-anchor for NBC4’s weekend evening newscasts at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. Additionally, she co-anchors the station’s weekday News at 11 a.m. and is a general assignment reporter during the week.
Kathy Vara Career
Vara is a Los Angeles television veteran and relocated from the East coast to Southern California in 1994. She became the co-anchor of “Today in La” NBC4’s early-morning cast. Vara is widely respected for her journalistic integrity and versatility since then.
Before moving to Los Angeles, She worked at NBC stations in Dallas, Minneapolis and Washington DC. Vara worked at ABC affiliates KVII-TV in Amarillo, Texas in the late 1980’s and KSAT-TV in her hometown San Antonio, Texas. In 2001, she was hired at KABC-TV on their morning newscast until early 2010. Vara left KABC after a nine-year stint on the morning news and made her first on air appearance on March 29, 2010 on “Today in LA”.
At NBC, Vara has reported live during numerous crucial breaking news stories, such as the O.J Simpson criminal trial. In addition, She also covered the North Hollywood bank robbery shoot-out and the Columbine High School massacre. Vara reported on the Conrad Murray trial and the Chilean Miner rescue too.

She is a recipient of three Golden Mike Awards for Best Daytime Cast. Vara was also part of the team that won two local-area Emmy Awards for Best Regularly Scheduled Daily Morning Newscast.
She is known for her dedication to organizations that promote lupus awareness and education. Vara’s passion for equestrian sports has assisted local non-profit organizations in utilizing horses and riding skills to teach inner-city youth life skills. The Compton Junior Posse, is one of these organizations that honored Vara in 2011. For her work with the after-school program that assists Compton youngsters stay off the streets and out of gangs.
Furthermore, Vara has also been honored by the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s Local Impact Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. The award was for her many contributions to the local television and community. In addition, she is a proud recipient of the prestigious Hispanic Heritage Award from President Clinton. Vara also received from the City of Los Angeles the Women of Courage Award.
She started her broadcasting career at North Texas State University in Denton. Vara was the producer and host of “North Texas Scene” a thirty minute magazine program highlighting college and local life. She was also an intern at the Dallas NBC affiliate, her interviews aired on the station’s newscasts.
Vara is married and lives in the Los Angeles area with a zoo of pets, such as two dogs, horses and a very outspoken parrot named Prince Harry. She is a competitive equestrian and has won regional titles in Dressage. She was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas.
