Joey Safchik Biography
Joey Safchik is an award winning journalist currently working at NBC 7 San Diego as a reporter. She joined the station in November 2023.
Joey Safchik Career
Safchik graduated with honors from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 2021. She triple-majored in journalism, political science and international studies. Safchik is a recipient of five student Emmy Awards.
Following her graduation, Safchik worked as a reporter/ investigative reporter for 2 years at KETV, an ABC affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska. While at the station, she reported on education, politics and the occasional tornado. In addition, Safchik’s work brought attention to injustices in the prison system and among student’s in special education programs. She is a recipient of a Great Plains Journalism Award for feature storytelling.
At the University, Safchik spent years as the news director of the Northwestern News Network. She spent two summers as an intern for NBC Nightly News in Los Angeles Bureua. In addition, Safchik also interned at KGET in Bakersfield, California. Further internship was at ABC 7 Chicago, she spent a quarter reporting in Washington D.C. and reported from the Middle East too. Safchik received both of Medill’s prestigious broadcast journalist awards on graduation.
She covers city and state politics for the owned & operated NBC, San Diego. Within her first three months at the station, Safchik had covered a the passage of controversial housing plan, historic flooding, and the mayoral election.
Her interest in journalism began when she was in fifth grade, her mom took Safchik and her siblings to the California Science Center. While her younger sister was intrigued by the High Wire Bicycle. And her then-toddler brother just loved the 50-foot human body stimulator. She’d found something more interesting: an anchor desk, complete with a teleprompter and her mom’s first-generation iPhone camera.

She made her stage debut as an Oompa Loompa at age 4 with the LA Youth Theatre Project, and made her professional debut 10 years later in The Diary of Anne Frank at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. In addition, Other favorite credits include Anne Frank at the Simi Valley Cultrural Arts Center; Fiddler on the Roof at the El Portal; A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Theatricum Botanicum. TV/Film: Netflix’s American Vandal and Grace and Frankie; New Form Digital Studios’ Warigami; ABC Digital’s Unfinished Scripts. She works very closely with The Miracle Project.
Furthermore, Safchik is the co-founder of the teen theatre company, Worst First Kiss Productions. She is also a producer and performer and played CB’s Sister in their twice extended run of DOG SEES GOD, directed by Jonah Platt.
Safchik loves working with children and young adults with autism spectrum disorders. Through performance art therapy and she is a also a mentor at Medill Media Teens.
