Jo Ling Kent is an award winning journalist currently working as the senior business and technology correspondent for CBS News, where her reporting is featured across all CBS News programs and platforms. She joined the network in July 2023.

Jo Ling Kent Career
Kent has more than 15 years of experience covering the intersection of technology and business in the United States as well as the emergence of China as a global economic power. In addition, at CBS News she adds to the division’s existing reporting on international economics, including everything from personal finance and consumer trends to the Federal Reserve and the World Bank.
Moreover, in her career Kent has reported extensively on such critical issues as artificial intelligence’s impact on our lives, viral disinformation; social media privacy issues, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global supply chain. Furthermore, she also led investigations into the conditions of workers at Amazon’s warehouses and Facebook’s influence on the 2016 elections.
In June, 2020, Kent was in the field reporting on the George Floyd protests in Seattle, Washington when she was hit on-air by a Seattle Police Department flash-bang grenade. The device burnt part of her clothing but she was not significantly injured. During her second pregnancy in April 2021, Kent received a COVID-19 vaccine shot on air during a report about the vaccine and pregnancy.
Prior to joining CBS News, Kent was the business and tech correspondent for all NBC News and MSNBC platforms for six years and her reporting earned an Edward R. Murrow Award and three Emmy nominations.
In addition, she covered major tech companies and startups as a correspondent and podcast host for the Fox Business Network from 2013 to 2016.
Previously, Kent was an investigative and general assignment reporter at NBC Connecticut, where she was part of the news team that earned a Peabody for coverage of the Sandy Hook school shooting. Additionally, Kent also covered the 2012 presidential race as a campaign embed reporter for NBC News.

In 2008, after graduating from college, she began her career in journalism in Beijing, China, as a digital reporter in ABC News’ Beijing bureau and then returned to Beijing as an associate producer at CNN after graduating from the London School of Economics. On 27 February, 2011 while working as a field producer during the 2011 Chinese pro-democracy protests in Beijing, Kent and CNN reporter Eunice Yoon were detained by police in Wangfujing for half an hour. They had been reporting on the protests when an officer knocked Kent’s camera out of her hands and physically forced them into a bank where they were detaining several other journalists.
Kent is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar to China, focused on women’s access to legal aid at Peking University Law School Center.
Kent attended Hopkins High School. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rice University and also holds two Master’s Degrees in International Affairs from the London School of Economics and Peking University. Kent is also an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association, a former term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and currently serves on the board of Libraries Without Borders U.S. and the advisory board of the Very Asian Foundation.
