Jim Lokay Career

Lokay had this knack for talking to just about anyone and an obsession with being near a microphone when he was a kid. He worked the rooms at family parties, recited current events for total strangers and used any excuse to make announcements over the loudspeaker at the bowling alley his dad ran for years.

That foreshadowed where Lokay’d end up thirty years later as a journalist. Some of his junior high yearbooks are inscribed with “Jim Lokay, the 45th President of the United States,” but he opted for radio and television the day he arrived on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania, and never looked back.

Lokay was born and raised in East McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies from California University of Pennsylvania in 2002.

Lokay started covering the dozens of high school football teams throughout Western Pennsylvania, when someone commented he looked like a sports guy though his athleticism only extended to bowling and mini golf. Furthermore, Lokay lugged the camera around, shot the games, and turned around the highlights for a local cable channel. He did play-by-play for California University athletics (go Vulcans!), but during the 2000 elections, his passion turned to news.

Lokay ran the overnight operations for a radio news operation, Metro Networks in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for two years. In addition, he worked each night from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., writing, editing, and anchoring newscasts for several stations. Lokay covered some Pittsburgh Pirates games for a sports radio station, too.

Jim Lokay FOX 5 DC

Next, Lokay moved for over two years to the snowy abyss of upstate New York to work for Time Warner’s 24-hour news operation in Syracuse, New York as an anchor and digital journalist. He did everything from reporting and anchoring to (once again) covering high school football. Lokay loved his time there, but during his first winter there, he dug out through 181 inches of snow.

Lokay fulfilled his dream of working in television news in his hometown a few years later, spending more than six years at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was employed as a traffic reporter, but soon found himself on the anchor desk, in the field, co-hosting a Pittsburgh Steelers pre-game show with Hines Ward, Ryan Clark, and Antwaan Randle-El, and doing intermission reports for Pittsburgh Penguins preseason games. Additionally, Lokay covered two Super Bowl parades, one Stanley Cup parade, the 2011 Winter Classic between the Pens and Caps, and the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star game.

Jim Lokay WCVB Boston

Prior to moving to FOX 5 DC, Lokay made the hardest decision of leaving Pittsburg, to WCVB in Boston, Massachusetts as a news and sports anchor and reporter for over four years in 2011. He had a front-row seat to some of the biggest news stories of that generation. Lokay was one of the first anchors on the air when the bombs went off at the Boston Marathon finish line and covered the city’s comeback. In addition, Lokay spent days reporting from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, a record-setting winter and Superstorm Sandy. He also covered The Patriots losing a Super Bowl. The Red Sox winning a World Series., The Patriots winning a Super Bowl and Deflategate. Lokay did just about everything there and even had his own series where he profiled exceptional high school seniors battling back from life challenges.

If there’s anything Lokay has learnt to expect in the news business, it is: don’t expect anything. And while they frequently find ourselves covering stories that they’d rather not cover, they also get a chance to shine a light on the community and share the good news as well. This is where viewers come in, interact with him on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and tell him what matters to you. Lokay can’t wait to get to know viewers better in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV).
