Jessica Aguirre Biography
Jessica Aguirre is an Emmy award winning journalist currently working as evening anchor at NBC Bay Area News at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. She has been a primetime, evening anchor in the station for over two decades.
Jessica Aguirre Career
Besides anchoring the evening news, Aguirre is also the co-host of NBC Bay Area’s Race in America: The conversation alongside Marcus Washington. The show explores racial equity and social injustice. In addition, the show attempts to bridge the divide between backgrounds and generations.
She started her career in journalism at the Spanish language network, Univision, WLTV-23 as an assignment desk assistant while attending the University of Miami. In 1988 she became a reporter for the network’s first lifestyle news magazine, TV “Mujer”, (TV Woman) before moving to WCIX then CBS’s Miami affiliate. Two years later , she worked as a general assignment reporter for FOX affiliate WSVN. Aguirre was promoted to co-anchor for the station’s 10 p.m. newscast, which also featured young Jillian Warry as the meteorologist.
Prior to arriving in the Bay area in 1998, Aguirre worked as an anchor and reporter in ABC owned and operated station KABC-TV in Los Angeles, California and Miami. In the mid 1990s , after her work in Los Angeles, she came to the San Francisco Bay Area KGO-TV Channel. After leaving her KGO position, Aguirre was hired as an anchor for NBC owned and operated station KNTV Channel 11.

She is a recipient of Emmy awards for her series on the struggles of migrant children and also for her investigative work on child molesters. In addition, she won the Associated Press award for her series detailing the struggle of boat people fleeing Cuba. At the NBC Bay area, she has earned an Emmy for her touching series, on the emotional journey of East Bay transgender teen. The series covers her efforts to preserve her fertility before undergoing sex reassignment surgery.
In addition, Aguirre has another Emmy for her live coverage of the “Ghostship” warehouse fire in Oakland. She also field anchored from the deadly Sonoma and Napa county firestorms.
Not so long ago, Aguirre was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Silver Circle. This was for twenty five years of excellence in television journalism.
She is the daughter of immigrant parents and is fluent in Spanish. Aguirre is deeply involved in organizations that promote literacy and help stem the Latino achievement gap. Such as the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley. She attends many community events in East Bay where she lends her voice to a various local causes. Her passion for news and global events has led her from Cuba to England and many places in between.

Aguirre has covered natural disasters like Hurricane Andrew and other man made catastrophes like the Oklahoma City bombing. In addition, she has also reported on the race riots in Miami and the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 from ground zero. Furthermore, Aguirre travelled to Brazil for the summer Olympic Games where she field anchored in both stations. In English for NBC Bay area and in Spanish for sister station Telemundo 48. She interviewed Bay Area athletes and highlighted the security and political issues, facing the people of Rio and Olympic tourists.
At home, Aguirre has focused on covering laws and events that influence children. From investigative stories that uncover loopholes set up by her law to the deteriorating state of education in the public school system. Her Emmy nominated education show “Class Action” took a dep look at the issues facing California educators and public schools. Her investigative report into the aftermath of the Napa earthquake and the effect on local schools led to school safety legislation being introduced by Assemblyman Bill Dodd.
Aguirre resides in the East Bay , with her two daughters. Her devotion to learning, supporting children and local charities has her routinely on the lecture circuit in the Bay Area. She discusses education, gender equity and minority advancement in the workplace. Aguirre also serves on the board of Watermark, the Bay Area’s largest membership organization dedicated to increasing the number of women in leadership positions.
