Gia Vang Biography
Gia Vang is an Emmy Award winning journalist currently working as an anchor for the weekend edition of NBC Bay Area News at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. She co-anchors alongside Terry McSweeney. In addition, Vang is a San Francisco based correspondent for the station’s weeknight newscasts. She joined the station in July 2022.
Gia Vang Career
Prior to joining NBC Bay Area, she was working in KARE-TV (NBC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a news anchor for KARE 11’s Sunrise since 2019. While there, Vang covered multiple national stories. Such as the Derek Chauvin trial, the Kim Potter trial and Suni Lee’s historic Olympic Games. Furthermore, she is the first Hmong-American news anchor in an important media market. Vang co-founded the Very Asian Foundation with co-founder and award winning veteran journalist Michelle Li. The Foundation’s mission is to focus on Asian American experiences. In addition it supports organizations working with the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
Before KARE-TV, she worked as an anchor and reporter at KMPH-TV (FOX) / KFRE-TV (CW) in Fresno, California for six years. Prior to joining KMPH, Vang worked for two years as a reporter at KPNX-TV (NBC) in Phoenix, Arizona. Previously, she served as a reporter for WDAF-TV (FOX) in Kansas City, Missouri. Before that, Vang worked as a reporter and anchor for KEZI news in Eugene, Oregon for two years.
Vang was born in Modesto, California and raised in Sacramento, California. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Sacramento State University.
Vang grew up in California as one of 10 children born to parents who met in a refugee camp in Thailand. Her entire family would watch the local news every night, planting an early seed in Vang’s head. The seed bloomed while attending California State University, Sacramento. After graduation, Vang worked at TV stations in Eugene, Oregon, Phoenix, Arizona and Kansas City, Missouri and Fresno, California. Then she relocated to the Twin Cities, where her father currently resides.”
