Errol Barnett Biography

Errol Barnett is an award-winning journalist currently working as a CBS News 24/7 anchor and national correspondent based at the network’s headquarters in New York City. He joined the station in 2016.

 Barnett holds a distinct perspective on global events through a reporting career spanning more than twenty years and five continents. He appears regularly across all CBS News programs and platforms and has anchored several CBS Special Reports. Barnett regularly presses for answers on the biggest issues of our time from wherever they happen. He covered live the Supreme Court ruling ending Roe v. Wade and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. In addition, Barnett had exchanges with Presidents Joe Biden, Donald Trump and the U.S. Secret Service.

Furthermore, Barnett discusses important developments while anchoring CBS News from Studio 57 at noon eastern each Wednesday and Thursday. He is also a fill-in co-host on “CBS Mornings,” “CBS Saturday Morning” and the “CBS Weekend News.”

Prior to joining CBS, Barnett anchored “CNN Newsroom” from Atlanta, Georgia and a midday news hour from Abu Dhabi, UAE, during the network’s Peabody Award-winning coverage of the Arab Spring. In addition, he was part of “CBS Mornings”‘ 2022 Emmy win, and was bestowed a National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Salute to Excellence Award as host of CNN’s “Inside Africa” while he was based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Barnett hosted the feature magazine from 22 countries across both hemispheres including Madagascar, Tunisia, Namibia and Senegal in a span of two years.

From when he joined CBS in 2016, Barnett covered some of the most important beats from the network’s Washington, D.C. bureau. Additionally, he was assigned to the White House on weekends and was with President Barack Obama during his final overseas trip.

Barnett also questioned President Donald Trump several times on the South Lawn and aboard Air Force One about threats against journalists and other pressing topics. In the 2020 presidential campaign, his interview with then Democratic party candidate and Vice President Joe Biden regarding cognition was widely cited.

Recently as a transportation correspondent, he often interviewed Secretary Pete Buttigieg and trekked to transit hubs across the country revealing the coronavirus pandemic’s upheaval of the airline industry and supply chains.

Furthermore, intrepid field reporting in challenging conditions is evident through Barnett’s coverage of Hurricane Dorian. He was the only network journalist to fly with Hurricane Hunters through the Category 5 storm as it stalled over the Bahamas. Barnett further revealed the impact of climate change, reporting extensively from Grand Bahama Island, his crew also without electricity or running water, documenting the survivors and aftermath.

Barnett began his career in journalism at 18 years old in Channel One News in Los Angeles, California as the youngest anchor and reporter. He covered the 9/11 terrorist attacks, then-Senator Barack Obama’s first national speech, interviewed Congressman John Lewis and detailed the New England heroin epidemic.

He was born in Milton Keynes, England but his family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona when his mother married Gary Barnett, a U.S Air Force Sergeant. Barnett graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a focus on international relations from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2008.

He is a member of Investigative Reporters and Editors, SAG/AFTRA, the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists. Barnett lives in New York with his wife and dog.

His Jamaican grandfather, Gladstone Christie was one of the 500 Caribbean aircrew serving with the British Royal Air Force during World War II. Barnett has English, German and Jamaican heritage and has two siblings, an older brother Danny and older sister Natalie who is deceased.

His mother later married Gary Barnett, a US Air Force Sergeant who served in the Gulf war before moving the family to Phoenix, Arizona.
