David Begnaud Biography
David Begnaud is an award winning journalist currently working as a CBS News contributor in Los Angeles, California. He previously served as the lead national correspondent for “CBS Mornings,” based in New York City and joined the network in 2015.

Begnaud’s reporting has featured across all CBS News broadcasts and platforms, including “CBS Evening News,” “48 Hours,” “CBS Sunday Morning” and CBS News 24/7. He has been a recipient of some of journalism’s most prestigious awards.
His most notable assignments was his coverage of Hurricane Maria when it hit Puerto Rico in October 2017. Begnaud further spent more time covering Puerto Rico’s recovery than any other network news correspondent, traveling to the island countless times and breaking multiple major stories. In addition, his distinctive, unmatched reporting resulted in government action, and throughout the crisis, he delivered sustained coverage on all platforms especially on social media.
In 2018, Begnaud’s coverage of Hurricane Maria earned him the prestigious George Polk Award for public service, which was the first time given to a journalist since 1978. The award, as the nominating committee states, places “a premium on investigative work that is original, resourceful and thought-provoking.” He also received Radio Television Digital News Association’s First Amendment Leadership Award for his significant contribution to the protection of the First Amendment and freedom of the press. Begnaud was also designated a “Puerto Rican Champion” and participated in the 2018 Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. He is also an honorary Puerto Rican highly esteemed by the people of Puerto Rico. In 2023, Begnaud was honored with the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Speech and Debate Association. Begnaud credits speech, and his beloved speech coach, Josette Cook Surratt, with helping him find his voice, and himself.

At CBS News, Begnaud has covered significant news stories around the world including the shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. In addition, he covered the terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, and the devastating earthquake that hit Ecuador in April 2016 leaving hundreds dead and thousands injured. Furthermore, in 2017, Begnaud covered several hurricanes, Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Hurricane Irma in Florida, and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. His coverage of important national and international stories is also featured prominently on CBS News 24/7. Furthermore, in July 2019, Begnaud was back in Puerto Rico reporting on the Puerto Rico protests and the resignation of then governor Ricardo Rosello. He was received warmly by the Puerto Ricans on the island, who see him as their ally.
Prior to CBS, Begnaud covered a wide variety of national breaking news from weather to crime for multiple news organizations. He worked at KSLA in Shreveport Louisiana from 2005 to 2007. Begnaud then joined KOVR in Sacramento, California where he spent three years, before moving to KTLA in Los Angeles, California. In 2015, CBS News named him the Miami-based correspondent for the network and then relocated to the network’s Dallas bureau in January 2017.
His career in journalism began in local news at KLFY-TV as an unpaid “teen reporter” while in high school in Louisiana. After his high school graduation, KLFY-TV hired him as a full-time reporter. Begnaud later became the weekend morning and evening news anchor of Eyewitness News and attended college during the week.
He was born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, the heart of Cajun country. Begnaud attended Teurlings Catholic High School. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana in 2005.

He was born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, the heart of Cajun country. Begnaud was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at 6 years old with his tics being mainly nonvocal such as sniffing. In December 2018, he revealed this fact publicly and said his parents never allowed him to use it as an excuse for not succeeding. And that Tourette’s was one of the primary motivators for him to persevere and succeed in journalism. His parents are Benjamin Hall and Connie Depanie.

Begnaud reported to Washington Blade that he and his partner, Jeremy, of Los Angeles, California had been together for almost 12 years in 2018. He also stated that he had come out to his family a decade earlier. Begnaud came out publicly on 24 June, 2018, by posting a picture with his partner after seeing pride celebrations in New York City.
