Chris Cuomo Biography

Christopher Charles Cuomo is an award winning American television journalist currently working as an anchor at NewNation in New York City. Earlier on, he worked at ABC News as the chief law and justice correspondent. And Cuomo also worked as the co-anchor for ABC’s 20/20 news anchor for Good morning America from 2006 to 2009. He was an anchor for CNN and co-hosted its morning show New Day from 2013 to May 2018. Cuomo then moved to Cuomo Prime Time in June 2018.

He is the brother of Andrew Cuomo who was the 56th governor of New York from 2011 to 2021. Andrew is the son of Mario Cuomo who was the 52nd governor of New York from 1983 until 1994. Cuomo was fired by CNN in December 2021 following reports he helped in the defense against sexual harassment allegations that led to his brother’s resignation. Thereafter, he joined Nexstar media group hosting Cuomo for NewsNation.

His early career in journalism included appearances related to social and political issues on CNBC, MSNBC and CNN. Cuomo was a correspondent and political policy analyst for Fox News and For Broadcast Network’s Fox Files. He reported on a wide range of stories concentrating on controversial social issues.

At ABC and as co-anchor of 20/20, he did a year-long coverage of heroin addiction that revealed the extent it was affecting suburban families. Additionally, he covered the Haiti earthquake, child custody, bullying and homeless teens. His undercover work for-profit school recruiters was followed by policy changes including an industry-wide cleanup. A BMW owner tip to Cuomo led to a recall of over 150,000 affected vehicles.

He was the news anchor for Good Morning America from September 2006 to December 2009. Coumo was the main reporter for breaking news stories nationally and internationally including dozens of assignments in some ten countries. He covered the war on terrorism on numerous occasions in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq and his convoy was hit by an IED. In the US he reported on the Virginia Tech Shooting, Fort Hood shooting in 2009 and the Pennsylvania Amish School shootings. He broadcasted live in August 2007 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Sago Mine Collapse and the Minneapolis bridge collapse.

Chris Cuomo Move to CNN

In early 2020, while Cuomo was recovering from COVID-19, he interviewed his brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on his CNN program. Reports about sexual harassment allegations against his brother surfaced. Cuomo on his program in March 2021 said he could not cover any issues about the allegations on the program admitting his conflict of interest.

Cuomo is reported to have been involved in strategic discussions to advise his brother on how to respond to the allegations. Furthermore, CNN referred to Cuomo engaging in the conversations “inappropriate” but did not take any disciplinary action against him. Many CNN staffers got angry by Cuomo’s conduct as it was a violation of journalism ethics and standards. He issued an apology and stated advising his brother was a “mistake” that would never happen again.

The New York attorney general’s office disclosed documents on November 29, 2021, that showed Cuomo used his media sources to reveal information regarding his brother’s known accusers. In addition, he inquired about the possibility of new accusers who had yet to come forward. Cuomo assisted in formulating statements for Andrew and was actively in touch with his brother’s top aide about his misconduct. He was suspended indefinitely by CNN the next day and after an internal review overseen by a law firm on December 4 Cuomo’s employment was terminated.

During an interview with Dan Abrams on NewsNation on July 26, 2022, he announced he would be hosting a new primetime program. On the Nexstar Media group owned channel later in the year. The new series, Cuomo premiered on October 3, 2022.

He is a recipient of countless Emmy Award nominations. His profile on Good Morning America of the 12 year old poet Mattie Stepanek was awarded a News Emmy. Cuomo is one of the youngest correspondents to receive the award.

He has received Polk and Peabody Awards for team coverage. Cuomo’s work has been awarded in the areas of breaking news, business news and legal news with the Edward R. Murrow Award. In addition, he was awarded the 2005 Gerald Loeb Award for Television Deadline business reporting for “Money for Nothing?”. He is also a recipient of the American Bar Association Silver Gavel Award for juvenile justice investigations.
