Catherine Garcia Biography
Catherine Garcia is an award winning journalist currently working as an anchor for NBC7 News, weeknights at 4pm, 6 pm and 11 pm. She is a recipient of multiple Emmys and a Golden Mike Award for her reporting in San Diego. Garcia joined NBC 7 in 2003.

Catherine Garcia Career
Prior to joining NBC7, San Diego, she was a reporter and anchor at ABC station WFAA, Dallas. Previously, Garcia worked for several years as an anchor and reporter in KTSM-TV, El Paso, Texas. She also spent three years as a morning anchor at KTBC-TV in Austin, Texas. Garcia began her career in journalism working behind the scenes at CNN Headquarters in Atlanta and CNN Los Angeles Bureau.
She joined NBC 7 San Diego as the station’s weekend anchor in 2003. Garcia was promoted to the primary evening news anchor in 2011 making her the first Hispanic in the role at the news station. That is an interesting observation considering that 1 in every 3 people in San Diego County are Hispanic, according to a 2014 survey by the United States Census Bureau.
Besides anchoring newscasts, Garcia partners with the Voice of San Diego organization. They produce an award-winning series called “San Diego Explained.” The series tries “to break down the big issues that are affecting the region in a TV friendly and easily digestible way,” according to her blog.
Garcia anchored nightly newscasts from her study at home during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Garcia is very proud of her special reports on the mental health care crisis “Breakdown: Investigating San Diego’s Health Care Crisis”. In addition, she has also worked on a special report with another documentary on the fentanyl crisis,” Poison Pill.
She is a recipient of multiple awards and is especially proud of the two Emmys and a Golden Mike. Garcia and her team also won the “Best in Show” honors from the San Diego Press Club. For “Breakdown: Investigating San Diego County’s Mental Health Care Crisis,” a year-long project that revealed a system “in need of an overhaul.”
Garcia graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Spanish from the University of Southern California. She also studied abroad through the semester at sea program.
Garcia is dedicated to her family as well, besides her journalism career. She and her husband Tad have a 17-year-old son, which inspires her self-referencing blog title, “mom by day… news anchor at night.” Her family also includes two cats and yellow Labrador.
Garcia enjoys spending her free time with her family and is also a big fan of tennis, traveling, good food and the USC Trojans.
