Candice Nguyen Biography
Candice Nguyen is a Peabody award-winning investigative journalist currently working with NBC Bay Area as an investigative reporter. She was born in Oakland, California, and investigative reporting is her way of fighting for her community. Ngunyen joined the station’s Investigative Unit in February 2020.
Candice Nguyen Career
Her father died of an aneurysm when she was in third grade and her family suddenly lost their home. Experiencing housing insecurity and watching her young, overwhelmed mother navigate social services gave and still gives Ngunyen the grit to tackle injustices plaguing our communities today.
Ngunyen’s investigation into Oakland’s failing 911 system won her a prestigious Peabody nomination. The 15 part series earned a national Hillman Prize for Broadcast Journalism and a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Continuing coverage. In addition, the coverage prompted state officials to put Oakland on notice and the city made a $2.5 million investment into its struggling dispatch center. Furthermore, the judges said, “This is a reminder of how important this watchdog work is.”
Besides crime reporting, her investigative expertise expands into public transit, police misconduct and housing issues.
She received a Peabody Award and a national Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Sigma Delta Chi Award in 2022. The awards were for Ngunyen leading a ten month long investigation revealing why several single fathers are denied access to emergency services, rental housing and childcare.
The five-part series No Man’s Land led to police and housing policy reform in numerous Bay Area cities.

Ngunyen’s journalism career has come full circle with her joining NBC Bay Area again. More than a decade ago, she worked at the station as an intern and writer. In addition, the reporters and photographers who first assisted her land a reporter job all those years ago, she now calls her friends and colleagues. Shortly after working in KION/KCBA Central Coast News in Salinas, California., she spent about five years reporting and anchoring in San Diego at XETV and NBC 7 San Diego. Prior to joining NBC Bay Area, Ngunyen was an investigative reporter for KTVU 2 News, which is based in Oakland, California for three years.
In her spare time, she loves discovering hole-in-the-wall restaurants and spending time with her husband and dog named Lola. Lola loves pets, cuddles and chicken bits; not necessarily in that order.
