Anna Coren Biography

Anna Coren is an award winning journalist currently working as a CBS News foreign correspondent based in Hong Kong. She joined the network in January 2025.

Prior to joining CBS News, Coren was working as an International correspondent for CNN International for over sixteen years. She is an Emmy Award-winning international correspondent and will cover the Asia-Pacific region as the incoming President Trump administration takes the White House.

Moreover, Coren joins CBS News with more than sixteen years of experience covering conflicts, humanitarian crises, natural disasters and global politics as a correspondent and anchor for CNN. In addition, she has reported extensively from war zones in Afghanistan, Iraq and Ukraine and covered the aftermath of tsunamis, flooding and super typhoons in Japan, the Philippines and Bangladesh. Furthermore, Coren was on assignment in Afghanistan in 2021 during the U.S. troop withdrawal as the country fell to the Taliban.

All through her career, she has interviewed world leaders, including President Bill Clinton and Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Coren also interviewed Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Australian Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard.

After graduation, she began her career in television working for regional television networks Prime for a year and NBN for over an year. In 1999, Coren was hired by the Nine Network and earned a spot as an on-camera reporter for National Nine News in 2000. She began presenting news updates and the National Nine Early Morning News in 2002.

In December 2003, Coren began her career at the Seven Network presenting late news updates and presenting the summer edition of Today Tonight instead of Naomi Robson. In addition, she presented many one-off events like Australia’s Brainiest Kid, 2005 Edinburg Military Tattoo, Royal Wedding Night with Seven and Zero Hour – The Bali Bombings. Coren was also a fill-in news presenter in the morning news program Sunrise and also presented Seven’s factual series True Stories.

In 2005, Coren relocated to United States as a correspondent following her appointment at Seven News replacing Mike Amor who returned to Australia to present Seven 4.30 News. In her role she appeared on the Global Notebook segment for Sunrise. During her time as the Seven Network’s U.S. correspondent, Coren also covered the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War from northern Israel and the 2005 G8 Summit at the Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland.

Coren was further appointed presenter of Today Tonight on 27 January 2007, as Naomi Robson’s replacement after she left the show on 1 December 2006. In her role as presenter of Today Tonight, she became the frequent subject of satire by the presenters of the television show The Chaser’s War on Everything.

In September 2008, Coren announced that she would be leaving Seven News following her appointment with CNN in Hong Kong. She was replaced by Matthew White, after presenting Today Tonight for the last time on 10 October 2008.

CNN apologised for their coverage of a mass murder in Thailand in October 2022. Coren and her cameraman Daniel Hodge were temporarily detained for trespassing and filming a scene without permission. They were fined $133 and told to leave the country. The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand criticised the action as “unethical” and “insensitive”.

In addition to her experience in television news, Coren also directed the independent documentary “The Noble Guardian” about Afghan women’s rights activist Mahbouba Seraj who refused to leave her country after it fell to the Taliban. In 2023, the film was honored at the L.A. Shorts International Film Festival as Best Documentary.

Additionally, she is a contributed author for the book Through Her Eyes – Australia’s Women Correspondents from Hiroshima to Ukraine. Coren wrote about her own experiences reporting from the frontline in Afghanistan.

She was born and raised in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. Coren graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from Charles Sturt University, Bathurst Campus in 1996.
