Anderson Cooper Biography

Anderson Hays Cooper is an award winning American broadcast journalist and political commentator currently working as an anchor for CNN news broadcast show Anderson Cooper 360°. In addition to his duties at CNN, he serves as a correspondent for 60 minutes produced by CBS News and joined CNN in 2001.

Anderson Cooper Career

Cooper graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Yale University in 1989 and began travelling the world. He was shooting footage of war torn regions for Channel One News. In 1995, Cooper was hired as a correspondent by ABC News but soon took more jobs throughout the network. Such as a co-anchor for a short time, reality game show host and fill-in morning talk show host.

He joined CNN in 2001 and was got his own show which he still hosts, Anderson Cooper 360°. Cooper developed a reputation for his on the ground reporting of breaking news events, with his coverage of Hurricane Katrina. His popularity sharply increased. Furthermore, he received a National Order of Honor and Merit, the highest honor granted by the Haitian government for this coverage of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. From September 2011 to May 2013, he worked as the host of his own syndicated television  daytime talk show, Anderson Live.

In 2005, Cooper covered the tsunami damage in Sri Lanka; the Cedar Revolution in Beirut Lebanon and the death of Pope John Paul II. In addition, he covered the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. Cooper cover the Niger famine from Maradi in August 2005.

Cooper has been a recipient of 18 Emmy Awards, two Peabody awards and an Edward Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club in 2011. He is a member of the Vanderbilt family and came out as gay in 2012. Cooper became “the most prominent gay journalist on American television”. He became the first LGBT person to moderate a presidential debate in 2016. Cooper has also received numerous Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) media awards.

He was born in Manhattan, New York City. Cooper is the youngest son of his mother Gloria Vanderbilt, an artist who died in June 2019 at 95 years old. And his father Wyatt Emory Cooper, a writer who passed on in 1978 at 50 years old during an open heart surgery. He has three sibling brothers; Carter Vanderbilt Cooper who died by suicide in 1988 at 23 years. And two half brothers Leopold Stanislaus Stokowski and Christopher Stokowski from his mother’s ten year marriage to Conductor Leopold Stokowski.

His maternal grandparents were millionaire equestrian Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt  of the Vanderbilt family and socialite Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt. And Reginald’s patrilineal great-grandfather was business magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, who founded the prominent Vanderbilt shipping and railroad fortune. In 2021, Cooper and co-author Katherine Howe published Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty. A history of the Vanderbilt family going back to his Vanderbilt ancestors who came to New Amsterdam in the 17th century.

Cooper attended the Dalton School, a private co-educational day school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. After graduating from Dalton a semester early at 17 years, he traveled around Africa. For several months on a “survival trip”. Cooper contracted malaria on the trip and was hospitalized in Kenya. Describing the experience, he wrote “Africa was a place to forget and be forgotten in.”
